Biography:

Andrew King is Professor of Sociology at the University of Surrey, Guildford UK where he is also Co-Director of the Centre for Research on Ageing and Gender (CRAG) and Co-Chair of the Sex, Gender and Sexualities Research Group (SGS). His books include ‘Older Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Adults: Identities, Intersections and Institutions’ (Routledge, 2016), ‘Older LGBT People: Minding the Knowledge Gaps’ (Routledge, 2018) and ‘Intersections of Ageing, Gender and Sexualities’ (Policy Press, 2019). He currently leads the project ‘Comparing Intersectional Life Course Inequalities amongst LGBTQI+ Citizens in Four European Countries’ (CILIA-LGBTQI+), which is funded by the Norface consortium of European research councils. The key objective of the CILIA project is to provide cross-cultural evidence concerning life course inequalities experienced by LGBTQI+ people, comparing and contrasting these across four European countries with different yet interrelated social, historical, economic and political backgrounds: England, Scotland, Portugal and Germany. Additionally, the project examines how inequalities related to gender identity and/or sexuality vary and intersect with others, such as social class, ethnicity, citizenship status, health status, dis/ability, religion and geographical location across the life course. Andrew has a particular interest in issues around housing amongst LGBT+ people, especially later in life and his ‘Housing with Pride’ project developed the first ever UK framework to empower housing providers to work with their LGBT+ residents to improve services. Andrew is also a co-investigator on the #SafeHandsSafeHearts study, which is examining the effect of an eHealth intervention on COVID-19 knowledge, protective behaviors, and mental wellness of diverse LGBT+ People. Andrew is an Associate Editor of the journal Ageing and Society and the co-editor of two special issues on LGBT+ ageing and late life, one in the journal Sexualities and the other in the Journal of Aging Studies.
